a research on “house form and culture”
“Heuane Hane Lao” means “Lao Houses on Stilts“. It is the title of an architectural research on continuity and change of housing patterns in Laos, from rural traditional to urban modern.
This research, covering the detailed survey and analysis of four (4) villages and thirty six (36) Lao houses on stilts at various stages of “modernization”, was undertaken by students in Architecture from the School of Architecture of Université de Montréal (UdM) under the direction of Bob Hardy FRAIC, whilst he was Visiting Professor at the UdM School of Architecture.

The research was funded by a grant from the joint “Young Researchers in Architecture” Programme of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
